General Submission Guidelines
Please read ALL guidelines before submitting any work. We reject unread dozens of submissions weekly because writers do not follow guidelines. Also read the Copyright notification at the bottom of this page.
Copyright Information: In cases where we accept previously published materials, it is assumed that you retained the copyright to your work. We cannot publish material for which you are not the copyright holder. When submitting work for paying markets, you are granting us the perpetual right to publish the work in both electronic and print format as applicable in relation to the specific project the piece was submitted to For example, if you submit a poem for an anthology, we may at a later date decide to make the anthology available as an audio book. We would not be required to request your permission to do so. However, we cannot use your poem as part of a different project without your consent. Exceptions to this policy are as follows: Artwork: original artwork created for Bards and Sages projects may be used in marketing materials or promotional items outside of the original project. Examples of this would include putting a bookcover on a promotional t-shirt or creating promotional bookmarkers with an illustration. No compensation is made to artists when their work is involved in marketing or promotional materials. Occassionally, we will make such items available for sale to the general public. In such event, we pay artists a commission of 10% of the net profits on such sales. Actual copyright to the art remains with the artist. Work Made for Hire (text only): In general, RPG products commissioned by Bards and Sages, or submissions for RPGs accepted by Bards and Sages, are considered Work Made for Hire. The copyright of such products is retained by Bards and Sages, though the author shall receive credit as the author of the product. All 3.5/OGL RPG products are also subject to the terms of the Open Game License. This policy does not apply to artwork (see above). Licensing: Occassionally, Bards and Sages works in association with other publishers to cross-promote products. These agreements are worked out separately between Bards and Sages and the publisher, and are not affected by our general copyright policies.
General Submission Guidelines Unless otherwise noted, please refer to these guidelines when submitting work to Bards and Sages. The quickest way to guarantee your work is rejected is to NOT follow the guidelines. If you want us to give full consideration to your work, make sure you have read and follow the guidelines. We have two interns with which we share your submissions. We use your submissions as teaching tools to help our interns better understand the publishing process and to improve their own writing. We will sometimes copy them on our correspondence with you in regards to your submissions. Particularly rejection or acceptance letters. They are not copied on other more personal information, such as business transactions.
Please note that any submission with an attachment in a format other than specified in our guidelines will be deleted unread. All text submissions should be in Courier or Times New Roman, 10-12 pt. Do not use other fonts or colors other than black in your text. Ensure that the subject line of your e-mail clearly identifies the purpose of your submission. Vague, blank, or gimmicky subject lines may be deleted by our spam filters. Examples of bad subject lines are: LOOK AT THIS!, Plz read, Hi!, For your consideration, etc. Examples of good subject lines are: poetry submission for library, horror submission for anthology, etc. Include your full legal name, address, and a short bio with your submission. Any e-mail submission written in chatspeak will be deleted unread. That includes, but is not limited to, the use of such terms as NE1, plz, UR, or queries that refuse to capitalize the pronoun "I". In short, if you do not demonstrate the care and attention to write a proper, coherent sentence, then we have no interest in working with you. Your e-mail is the first chance you have to impress me as an editor.
| Paying Markets Bards and Sages Quarterly Bards and Sages Quarterly is accepting short speculative fiction of up to 2,000 words. We are interested in all aspects of speculative fiction. This journal is designed for a general readership, therefore keep this audience in mind. We will not publish supernatural erotica, so don't bother submitting any regardless of how good you personally think it is. We will not read it. Also, while we appreciate that, particularly with the horror genre, strong language and bloodletting are to be expected, if your story is more than 10% vulgarities please go expand your vocabulary before submitting. Also, we have no interest in stories that are nothing more than laundry lists of criminal acts. We don't need yet another first person serial killer narrative. Really. Again, we don't care how good you think it is. It's been done. And done. And done again. Submit stories in in Word document format or rich text format only. Payment is .01/word, payable upon publication. You will also get a digital copy of the issue your work appears in. We are also interested in speculative art. Art should tell a story in its own right, and not just be a character sketch. Artwork can be either black and white or full color, and should be submitted as a jpg, png, or tiff file attachment. Art should be sized for 7" x 10" page (full bleed). Payment is $15. If art is selected for use on the cover, you will also get a print copy of the issue your art appears in. In either case, we are buying FIRST TIME WORLDWIDE ELECTRONIC AND PRINT RIGHTS. Please do not submit previously published work (including work that appears online).
